Discover how ICL can help you see clearly without specs, even if you’re unsuitable for laser eye surgery

Solve your dependency on glasses and contacts for good

ICLs are an excellent alternative to laser eye surgery

Suitable candidates for vision correction with Implantable contact lenses (ICL) (also known as Implantable Collamer Lenses) include those who:
  • Want clear, crisp vision without glasses or removable contact lenses
  • Have had a stable prescription for at least one year prior to treatment
  • Don’t meet the requirements for LASIK because either their prescription is too high or their corneas are too thin
  • Want the flexibility to reverse or change if their visual needs alter in future.
The natural lens of the eye sits between the iris and the Implantable contact lenses. The ICLs work by correcting vision by focusing light through the lens and onto the retina, in a similar way to traditional contact lenses.
Advantages
  • Those who aren’t candidates for laser eye surgery or who have a high degree of refractive error can benefit from ICL lenses.
  • the procedure can also be reversed.
Disadvantages
  • ICL lenses are only recommended for those aged between 18-40.
  • Regular checkups are required as part of your aftercare regime.

There is a risk associated with all eye surgeries including not obtaining the desired result. Your eye surgeon will explain these risks and benefits in your preoperative assessment.

  • Cataract
  • Rise of intraocular pressure
  • Under or over correction
  • Cornea oedema
  • Infection

For patients who can’t have corneal refractive surgery, ICL lenses are a great alternative.

Alternatively, contact lenses or glasses could be used instead of surgery.

During a quick 30-minute outpatient procedure, we’re able to implant ICLs.

Here’s a breakdown of the procedure:

  • Step 1: Topical anaesthetic drops are used to anaesthetise the eye. Both eyes are usually operated on at the same time.
  • Step 2: An incision is made in the cornea and the pupil is dilated.
  • Step 3: Implantable contact lenses are inserted between the normal lens and the iris and correctly positioned. After surgery, the incision heals on its own.
  • Implantable contact lenses (ICLs) give great visual results including enhanced sharpness.
  • In one study, ICLs were given to patients who were US military warfighters: three months after surgery, uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 96% of patients.
  • In a STAAR surgical study, ICLs were implanted into 369 eyes, and the results were exceptional. 95% of the patients with good pre-operative visual acuity targeted for emmetropia (zero postoperative correction) had uncorrected visual acuities of 20/40 or better, and 57% had uncorrected visual acuities better than their best-corrected visual acuity preoperatively.

Investigators assess the long-term correction of moderate to high myopia using a posterior chamber phakic IOL with a central port design.

Implantable collamer lenses are a type of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (IOL). IOL are usually used for high degrees of refractive error or when corneal refractive surgery is contraindicated. Advantages over corneal refractive surgery, also include quicker recovery and reversibility.

Posterior chamber pIOL provide a more cosmetically appealing alternative to anterior chamber (AC) IOL because they are less visible externally and create less risk of endothelial cell loss (ECL) as they are placed further away from the cornea.

Phakic intraocular lens (phakic IOL or pIOL) implants are an alternative to LASIK and PRK eye surgery for correcting moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness). In some cases, phakic IOLs produce better and more predictable vision outcomes than laser refractive surgery.
