Who is a suitable candidate for LASIK?
  • LASIK is suited to those who:
    • Want to minimise their dependence on contact lenses or glasses
    • Are aged 18 years or over
    • Have held a stable eye prescription for at least one year
    • Demonstrate no health issues affecting their eyes
    • Show no signs of glaucoma or cataracts
    • No autoimmune diseases
    • Have corneas that are thick enough to create a corneal flap (this can only be determined by an examination)
    • +4 to -10 D and up to 6D astigmatism

How does LASIK work?

We can treat astigmatism, short-sightedness, and long-sightedness can be treated with LASIK to correct the eye’s focusing power.

  • Step one: A surgeon carefully reshapes the cornea with a laser as part of the procedure.
  • Step two: As a result, light travels more efficiently through the front of your eye.
  • Step three: This equates to clearer, crisper vision – without corrective eyewear.

    • Corneal infection
    • Cornea scarring
    • Loss of best-corrected vision
    • Corneal ectasia
    • Need for additional surgery
  •  Less serious risks include:
    • Dry eye
    • Regression (need for glasses or laser correction in future)
    • Dysphotopsia (night vision disturbance i.e. glare and halos)

What options and alternatives are there?

    • Lens replacement (refractive lens exchange, RLE, PreLEX)

The LASIK steps:
  • Step 1: Anaesthetic drops are placed carefully into your eye to numb it. A speculum is then utilised to keep the eye open once the anaesthetic has taken effect.
  • Step 2: A flap is created using a highly precise femtosecond laser.
  • Step 3: An excimer laser is then used.
  • Step 4: The flap is then gently folded back, exposing the inner corneal tissue to be treated.
  • Step 5: The corneal tissue is then reshaped and corrected using the excimer laser.
  • Step 6: The flap is then moved to its original position, protecting the eye like a natural bandage.

What results can I expect from LASIK?

It is estimated that LASIK offers the highest patient satisfaction of any elective procedure since most patients achieve 20/20 vision without glasses or contact lenses.
