SMILE is a less-invasive alternative to LASIK

It’s a great solution if you have shortsightedness or astigmatism

Suitability criteria for SMILE surgery:
  • Patients with a refractive error and who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses and contacts often find SMILE to be an excellent choice.
  • ReLEx® SMILE offers an effective alternative to PRK and LASIK surgery with its minimally invasive, bladeless approach.
  • Short-sightedness (myopia) can be corrected with this treatment, whether an individual has astigmatism or not.
How SMILE works:
  • Through a keyhole incision, SMILE removes a tiny piece of corneal tissue called a lenticule using a femtosecond laser. Reducing your dependence on glasses and contact lenses, this procedure reshapes your cornea and corrects your vision.
Advantages
  • Better for the stability of the cornea
  • Less risk of developing dry eyes
  • No discomfort thanks to the use of numbing drops and less pressure on the eye during surgery
  • Quick – The SMILE laser is used for a fraction of the time that LASIK takes, resulting in fast treatment times
  • Fast recovery time
  • More patients are eligible for SMILE surgery
  • LASIK involves the creation of a flap, but this procedure does not, which means fewer complications and flap-related risks are associated with this treatment.
Disadvantages
  • As with any laser vision correction procedure, you may experience minimal side effects, such as blurred vision and “halos” seen around light sources during the healing process.
  • SMILE surgery is currently restricted to only correcting short-sightedness and astigmatism currently.
Are there any risks?

There is a risk associated with all eye surgeries including not obtaining the desired result. Your eye surgeon will explain these risks and benefits in your preoperative assessment.

  • Some rare side effects include:
    • Infection
    • Cornea ectasia
    • Blindness
    • Inflammation
    • Miscorrection
    • Dry eyes
    • Clouded vision
    • Double vision
    • Night vision issues
    • Debris

Need for further intervention

Options and alternatives:

Depending on your suitability, you will have options and alternatives.
For those who are not candidates for SMILE, there are alternative procedures available, these include;

  • LASIK
  • PRK / TransPRK
  • Lens replacement (refractive lens exchange, RLE, PreLEX)
  • ICL
SMILE surgery steps:
  • Step 1: Anaesthetic drops will be dropped into your eye to numb it. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, a speculum is used to keep the eye open.
  • Step 2: In this procedure, a little piece of corneal tissue (lenticule) is separated from the intact cornea and a small incision is made inside of it.
  • Step 3: In order to correct your prescription, we remove the lenticule through the incision.
What results can I expect?

A trustworthy US clinical trial that studied 336 eyes treated with SMILE found that 99.7% of them had achieved 20/40 vision at 6 months, and 88% of them had achieved 20/20 vision at 6 and 12 months.

Learn more about SMILE surgery from authoritative sources

The first year after SMILE treatments in a U.S. military center demonstrated early postoperative outcomes superior to PRK. SMILE seemed more predictable compared with LASIK. Click here for more information.

SMILE, an acronym for small incision lenticule extraction, is an alternative to LASIK surgery for the correction of nearsightedness. In some ways, SMILE eye surgery is similar to LASIK and it may offer advantages over LASIK for some patients. It is performed using a VisuMax femtosecond laser, and has a swift recovery period as the corneal incision heals within a few days without stitches. Click here for more information.

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a newer type of laser refractive surgery. This kind of surgery uses a laser to treat myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism (irregularly shaped cornea). The goal of SMILE is to correct your nearsightedness, astigmatism, or both, to improve your vision. Click here for more information.

In this surgical video, Drs. Edward Manche and Gabriel Valerio demonstrate standard SMILE surgery for a spherical and sphero-cylindrical correction. They describe the surgery from docking to lenticule extraction. Click here for more information.
