Lens replacement surgery (also called Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE) is a sophisticated development of cataract surgery

Lens replacement is a safe and permanent way to correct both short or long-sightedness, and prevent or remove cataract.

Lens replacement, also known as refractive lens exchange, is a great option of vision correction, but what is the suitability criteria?

Suitable candidates for lens replacement include:

  • Those who want good vision independent of glasses but who aren’t an ideal candidate for laser vision correction.
  • Those with a glasses prescription higher than the accepted range for laser eye surgery.
  • Those beginning to experience changes in vision due to the effects of ageing.
  • Those who do not suffer with glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, cornea pathology or other pre-existing problems with eye health.
  • Lens replacement surgery is a form of surgery used to correct your prescription ensuring you achieve sharper focus and clearer vision.
  • It works by replacing your eye’s clear natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
  • Doing this helps to reduce your need for reading glasses or bifocals.

Advantages

  • One of the main advantages of lens replacement is that it can treat eye conditions such as presbyopia, short and long-sightedness.
  • It can remove the need for glasses or other corrective lenses.
  • It’s a great alternative for people who cannot have other corrective eye surgeries.
  • It minimises the possibility of headaches and eye strain associated with reliance on corrective eyewear.

Disadvantages

  • Myopia (short-sightedness) increases the chances of retinal detachment when replacing lenses. Therefore, the surgery should only be undertaken if other options are not viable.
  • The likelihood of having to undergo further surgery after lens replacement surgery is rare, but it is possible.
  • Lens replacement surgery is more expensive than LASIK and other more common types of eye surgery.

There is a risk associated with all eye surgeries including not obtaining the desired result. Your eye surgeon will explain these risks and benefits in your preoperative assessment.

Lens choices

Depending on your vision needs and the health of your eyes, you can choose between three types of intraocular lenses (IOLs).

They are:

  • Monofocal: These are IOLs that focus in a monofocal direction. Regardless of the range of vision, monofocal lenses provide clear vision at a distance, intermediate-range, or near range but not simultaneously.
  • Toric: Toric IOLs can be used to correct astigmatism as well as treating long and short-sightedness.
  • Multifocal: A multifocal IOL provides clear vision at various distances. It works by enlarging or reducing the focus of an eye by shifting its position in the eye.

Alternatives to lens replacement include:

  • PRK
  • ICL

Similar to most vision correction procedures, lens replacement is not compulsory. The alternative however, is to continue to wear glasses or contact lenses.

It typically takes 15 minutes to perform a lens replacement procedure on an outpatient basis. It takes about a week to treat each eye separately.

Step 1: At the point where the cornea meets the white of the eye, we make a tiny, self-sealing incision
Step 2: After creating an opening in the membrane that covers the natural lens (the lens capsule), we can place the artificial lens inside.
Step 3: Lens extraction, this is when the lens is then split into small pieces and removed from the eye.
Step 4: Lastly, an artificial lens is inserted into the lens capsule to replace the lens. Based on your visual needs and goals, we pre-select the lens for you.

  • Your vision will be sharper after the lens replacement, and you will no longer need reading glasses or bifocals.
  • 4 out of 5 patients are completely free of glasses after lens replacement surgery.
