With lifestyle cataract surgery, patients can experience clear vision at most distances

Discover how lifestyle cataract surgery can give you visual freedom in moments

Lifestyle Cataract Surgery:
  • Many people mistakenly assume that cataract surgery must be performed when the cataract is “ripe” or “ready.” This is untrue.
  • Any person with cataract symptoms who have discussed the benefits and risks of cataract removal with their surgeon and feels that treatment is in their best interests should undergo cataract surgery.
  • An experienced surgeon is the best person who can help you decide if surgery is the right step for you since symptoms that may seem minor to one person can be extremely troubling to another. This is why a detailed discussion with an experienced surgeon is imperative before deciding whether or not surgery is right for you.
  • You can enjoy a greater range of vision with Lifestyle cataract surgery than with traditional cataract surgery.
  • Active individuals who value a low reliance on glasses for distance and mid-range vision will find this option ideal.
  • We will need to examine your eyes at your initial consultation to determine if you are a candidate for Lifestyle cataract surgery.
  • If you have already had cataract surgery but had to continue wearing glasses, we also offer Piggyback lens implantation.
  • With an Add-On lens, you can function without glasses, which makes it a great treatment if you still need to wear glasses after cataract surgery.
Here’s How Lifestyle Cataract Surgery Works:
  • Lifestyle cataract surgery works by replacing the cloudy, natural lens of the eye with a clear artificial lens.
  • The only real difference between Lifestyle cataract surgery and traditional cataract surgery is the choice of lens.
  • Traditional cataract surgery involves replacing the cloudy lens with a monofocal lens. Since the lens has only one focus, it allows you to see far but not near. You will still need glasses to perform some tasks at defined distances.
  • With Lifestyle cataract surgery, we replace the cloudy lens with an advanced premium lens. This advanced lens allows you to see for distance, reading and intermediate vision.
Advantages
  • Almost all patients achieve excellent distance vision with no glasses (20/25 or better)
  • This surgery allows patients to enjoy very high satisfaction and low complication rates
  • Typically, the procedure takes less than 30 minutes, and there is no overnight stay required
  • Recovery is quick and typically painless
  • Lens implants are permanent and therefore do not require replacement.
Disadvantages
  • It may take you more time for your vision to stabilise following Lifestyle cataract surgery than following Traditional cataract surgery.
  • You may not be suitable for multifocal IOL implantation if you have pre-existing problems with your eye health.
What are the risks?

There is a risk associated with all eye surgeries including not obtaining the desired result. Your eye surgeon will explain these risks and benefits in your preoperative assessment.

Please also remember that cataract surgery is common, while risks associated with modern-day cataract surgery remain low.

  • Approximately one in 1,000 people will suffer permanent, severe vision loss.
  • A risk of severe and permanent vision loss in both eyes occurs in approximately one in 250,000 bilateral cataract surgeries.
  • Approximately one in 100 cases will require additional surgery to remedy a problem.
  • About one in 20 operations has less serious complications, which may require further treatment during the operation or afterwards.
  • Further laser treatment will be required in one out of 10 patients at some point in the future due to opacity of the capsule behind the implant.
Lifestyle Cataract Surgery options
  • Only surgery will remove a cataract, so there is no alternative option as such. Still, there are different types of cataract surgery available to you.
  • The two types of cataract surgery to choose from are what we like to describe as the “standard” and “premium” options.
    • Our standard option is also the more traditional cataract surgery, whereby the cloudy lens gets replaced with a monofocal lens with one focus point. A pair of glasses will help you see clearly at other distances.
    • Our more premium option is Lifestyle cataract surgery. How does it differ? With Lifestyle cataract surgery, we remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a multifocal lens. This means it can focus on a range of points, to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses.
  • For those who’ve previously had Traditional cataract surgery and no longer wish to wear glasses, there’s a further option of Piggyback lens implantation. Think of it as an Add-On lens that helps you eradicate glasses from your life.
  • If you have bilateral cataract, you can have them done at separate days or both done on the same.
What are the steps involved?
  • Step one: The surgeon will use eye drop anaesthesia. We will make a small incision in the cornea – the transparent surface of the eye – using a laser or a scalpel.
  • Step two: A fine instrument is inserted through the incision. It gives off ultrasound vibrations helping to break up the lens into fine fragments. These fragments are then carefully removed under microscopic guidance.
  • Step three: Lastly, using an appropriate lens injector, we roll the lens up and carefully guide it into place. The new lens will sit in the same natural bag that held the original natural lens. No stitches are required.
  • Step four: A transparent shield is placed over the eye after surgery, which stays on for four hours. After the surgery, we will instruct you to use postoperative drops consisting of an antibiotic drop and two anti-inflammatory drops.

An average stay at the hospital is approximately three hours, with the surgery taking less than an hour.

What results can I expect?

The results of your Lifestyle cataract surgery results include clearer vision and being able to enjoy many tasks and activities without the need for glasses. About four out of five patients are completely free of glasses after RLE with widely used contemporary multifocal IOLs.

Upgrade Your Life

After cataract surgery, patients are often surprised by how much their life changes. Visual improvements often bring a newfound sense of freedom, a restoration of youthful function (like reading again over the age of 45, without glasses!), and a refreshed peace of mind.

There are two types of cataract surgery

One type gets rid of cataracts; the other does that and reduces dependency on glasses and contact lenses

Your vision is yellowing and hazy

Cataracts can cause blurry vision, halos around lights, and difficulty seeing colors.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to see an eye doctor soon. Left untreated, cataracts can lead to blindness.

Traditional cataract surgery is a safe and effective way to remove your cataracts and restore clear vision. This surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist and typically takes less than 30 minutes.

You don’t want to live with glasses or contacts

Cataracts are a common problem that can cause blurry vision and difficulty seeing in low light.

If you’re living with cataracts, then you know just how frustrating they can be. Not being able to see clearly can make everyday activities like reading, driving, or even cooking difficult.

Lifestyle cataract surgery is a new type of surgery that can help you get rid of your cataracts for good. This surgery is performed using the latest technology and is tailored to meet your individual needs. You’ll be able to see better than ever before after your surgery and will no longer need glasses or contact lenses.
